Nine
years after the enactment of the Personal Information Protection Act,
an integrated supervisory authority has finally been created.
-The
Integrated Personal Information Protection Commission is officially
launched with the full implementation of the Three data
protection laws.
The Personal Information Protection
Commission (PIPC) announced that the integrated PIPC will be
officially launched on August 5, 2020, nine years after the enactment
of the Personal Information Protection Act(PIPA) in 2011. With the
implementation of the Three data protection laws (PIPA, Information
and Communication Network Act, and Credit Information Act), which
were amended in February, the functions of personal information
protection which had been distributed to various ministries such as
the Ministry of Interior and Safety, the Korea Communications
Commission, and the Financial Services Commission, will be integrated
into the PIPC. The PIPC, which was a consensus-based administrative
agency under the jurisdiction of the President of the Republic of
Korea, has been upgraded to a ministerial-level central
administrative agency under the prime minister who has the authority
to conduct independent organization, personnel, and budget affairs,
and is exclusively responsible for the function of personal
information protection.
