The PIPC to Shape Privacy Guardrails for AI Innovation at Global AI Privacy Forum

On September 29, 2026, the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) will hold the Global AI Privacy Forum by bringing together distinguished participants from data protection authorities (DPAs), international organizations, industry, academia, and the diplomatic community to explore practical approaches to pro-innovation privacy governance, strengthen capacity building and international cooperation, and promote youth privacy in the era of AI.

Under the theme of “Privacy for Innovation, Partnership for Cooperation,” the Forum will explore the intersection of AI-driven innovation and privacy protection. As no single country can address the rapidly evolving AI landscape alone, the forum will seek possible avenues for capacity building and advancing international cooperation on privacy.

This event will be joined by Commissioner Philippe Dufresne of the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) and Chair of the Global Privacy Assembly (GPA), representatives from the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS), the Personal Information Protection Commission Japan (PPC), the Spanish DPA (AEPD), the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, Hong Kong (PCPD), as well as experts from Microsoft, Meta, Sony, Viva Republica, and other industry and international organizations to discuss the direction of personal data protection policies in the AI era from diverse perspectives.

After welcome remarks by Chairperson Kyung Hee Song, Alice Xiang, Global Head of AI Governance at Sony, and Hyunwoo Kim, Professor at KAIST, will deliver keynote addresses.

Under the title of “Innovation Powered by Privacy,” Session 1 will feature presentations by Chairperson Kyung Hee Song and Stefano Fratta, VP of Global Advocacy, Privacy & Data Policy at Meta. Moderated by Professor Yong Lim of Seoul National University of Law, the session will bring together speakers from the OPC, AEPD, and Microsoft's chief privacy officer to exchange views on how to strike a balance between privacy protection and AI powered innovation, grounded in accountability and trust.

The second session, under the theme of “Readiness Powered by Cooperation,” will discuss ways to strengthen cooperation and capabilities to address privacy challenges posed by AI in the global community, including emerging countries. Sangbu Kim, VP of the World Bank, will give a short presentation on the growing need for capacity building. Then, Zee Kin Yeong, Chief Executive of the Singapore Academy of Law, will moderate a discussion with speakers from the EDPS, PPC, PCPD, and VIVA REPUBLICA (Toss). The session will explore the importance of capacity building for DPAs, challenges in ensuring compliance, efforts being undertaken by participating organizations, and future directions for international cooperation.

Lastly, the Special Session, under the theme of “Growing up with AI,” will focus on the privacy of children and young people in the digital environment. Dr. Rebecca Portnoff will moderate the Special Session, joined by OPC Canada, the Embassy of Switzerland to Korea, international organizations working on child protection and rights, and a young member of the Government Innovation Strategy Committee. The session will discuss how to establish privacy protection measures that reflect the needs of children and young people as well as the respective roles of governments, businesses, and civil society. 

Chairperson Kyung Hee Song said, “Privacy protection in the era of AI is a trust-based foundation for sustainable innovation, rather than an obstacle to AI innovation.” She added, “This forum will provide an opportunity to strengthen cooperation among DPAs around the world and foster closer engagement with experts from international organizations, industry, and academia. The PIPC will continue to play a leading role in shaping global privacy norms and establishing a governance framework where AI-driven innovation and privacy protection can advance together.”
