October 2, 2026 (This is an unofficial translation of a press release, originally prepared in Korean.)
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) and The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) are recruiting participants willing to join the Third Policy Talk for Everyone under the title “How to Safeguard and Use Personal Information in the Era of AI” at The Commons at Yonsei University on November 1, 2026.
The Policy Talk for Everyone provides a platform where the public can engage in discussions to share their thoughts and experiences. Drawing on the insights gathered, the Policy Talk will explore potential policy directions through discussions between the government ministries and the public. The MOIS has organized such events to deal with pressing issues closely related to people’s daily lives.
Striking a Balance between Privacy Protection and Data Use in the Era of AI
As AI technologies have become embedded in people’s daily lives, the use of personal information to provide personalized services is also expanding. At the same time, public interest in how personal information is protected and used for AI training and service provision is growing.
In this context, the PIPC is pursuing reforms to the privacy protection framework to reflect the evolving data landscape in the era of AI. In August, the PIPC invited public input on reforms and plans to announce its policy direction informed by the ideas and suggestions received within this year.
The upcoming Policy Talk is part of these efforts and will provide an opportunity for the public to discuss how we can safeguard and use personal information. Experts will deliver presentations on key issues and the current state of personal information use in the context of AI. Participants will then be divided into small groups to share the need and concerns around the use of personal information and explore ways on how we can use personal information in a way that is encouraged and ideal.
Moreover, the general debate session will be held to allow participants to share various insights from their prior discussions and gather feedback on appropriate principles and policy schemes.
Open Recruitment of 200 Participants and Soliciting Opinions Online
The MOIS and the PIPC will select two hundred participants interested in protecting and using personal information to join the Third Policy Talk. Applications will start from October 1 to 11, 2026, via the MOIS website and the Communication Reform 24 (www.sotong.go.kr). Selected participants can be informed by relevant materials in advance to help them prepare for the discussions.
In addition to in-person discussions, the MOIS and the PIPC will solicit public opinions online. Anyone can submit ideas on protecting and using personal information in the era of AI via the Communication Reform 24. Ideas gathered through this process will be shared at the Policy Talk. Further details on the application process and schedule are available on the Communication Reform 24.
